Representative • Litigation Educator
Rodney Joseph Rouzan is a former law enforcement officer, union representative, certified personal trainer, educator, and workplace rights advocate dedicated to helping employees, public safety professionals, and union members understand their rights before workplace problems become legal battles.
Born and raised in Inglewood, California, Rodney grew up in a family deeply rooted in law enforcement and public service. His cousin, Chief Joseph T. Rouzan Jr., made history as the first Black Chief of Police for the Inglewood Police Department and served as Chief during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. That legacy shaped Rodney’s early understanding of leadership, discipline, public service, and accountability.
That tradition continues today. Rodney’s brothers and brother-in-laws are still serving in law enforcement, including agencies such as the Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles World Airports Police, UCLA Police Department, and LAPD. Public service has always been part of the Rouzan family’s identity.
In 1997, Rodney enlisted in the United States Air Force before leaving early to pursue his goal of becoming a police officer. At 22 years old, he entered the police academy, where he served as a squad leader, excelled academically and physically, and graduated without failing a single examination.
Rodney went on to build a career spanning more than two decades in law enforcement. He worked patrol assignments before joining the Bicycle Detail, one of the most rewarding assignments of his career. Passionate about fitness, he also trained police recruits and cadets, helped prepare future officers for the academy, and participated in endurance events including the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay.
In 2004, Rodney became a union representative, beginning a twelve-year commitment to representing fellow officers. During that time, he represented hundreds of officers in Internal Affairs investigations, disciplinary proceedings, grievances, administrative interviews, and workplace disputes. Those years gave him firsthand experience with how employers, investigators, human resources departments, and management build administrative records.
Rodney’s experience also extends beyond law enforcement. He has represented himself in complex disputes involving civil rights, employment law, wrongful termination, foreclosure litigation, unlawful detainer actions, probate disputes, insurance claims, and administrative hearings. In 2012, after challenging his own termination, he successfully represented himself and was reinstated. He also pursued federal civil rights litigation under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, resulting in the settlement of one of his federal cases.
These experiences inspired Rodney to create Word Wars 101, an educational platform focused on teaching people how to recognize workplace problems early, document properly, understand policy, and respond strategically when their rights are at risk.
At the heart of Rodney’s teaching is a concept he calls “Taking Court to the Streets.” The idea is simple: the record does not begin when a lawyer gets involved. The record begins the moment something happens. Every conversation, email, notice, policy violation, investigation, schedule change, or disciplinary action can become part of the record.
Through Word Wars 101, Rodney teaches employees, union representatives, supervisors, and public safety professionals how to ask better questions, preserve evidence, identify retaliation, understand due process, and build a stronger factual record before mistakes become permanent.
His mission is simple:
To educate people before they need a lawyer.
Rodney believes that when people understand their rights, document events properly, and respond with discipline, they are no longer powerless. They become prepared.
